If the lyrics to Jingle Bells are causing your heart to race and your palms to sweat this holiday, don’t breakdown into tears. Las Nomaditas will show you how to tame your holiday overwhelm with these tested tips:
1. THE EVERY TWO DAYS PRINCIPLE
Just as we should all take one to two days off from our workouts each week to allow our muscles to repair, we also need to take one to two days off to rest our bodies and minds.
When we schedule a full week of parties and workouts, we often don’t consider all the extra steps involved before getting to the celebrations. In a matter of seconds, our responsibilities can triple with a couple of pit stops along the way to change clothes, accessories, get a shoe heel fix, and most importantly, pickup a gift for the party host/hostess.
Consider taking Sundays or Mondays and Wednesdays off from social obligations. You will certainly find a schedule that works for you, and the point is to give yourself some time to recharge and take care of your personal obligations like paying bills or doing your laundry to mitigate any undercurrent of anxiety.
2. SAY NO TO HOLIDAY CONFECTIONS & SUGARY COCKTAILS AFTER 8PM
If you have found that you aren’t sleeping well, look to those mini cupcakes, champagne, and sweet cocktails as the culprit.
According to Dr. Frank Lipman, refined grains and sugars before bed can raise your blood sugar and cause your hormone levels to fluctuate which interrupts your sleep patterns.
When possible, opt for happy hour drinking over late-night soirees so that your body has time to start breaking down that alcohol long before you go to bed.
Also skip flavored alcohols and cocktails with juices. If you drink after 8PM, go for no more than two sugar-free cocktails or glasses of red wine, and drink a full glass of water between each drink.
3. OUTSOURCE YOUR STYLE IF IT CAUSES YOU STRESS ANXIETY
Hate to shop? Stores are super-crowded during the holidays, and peeling off all your winter layers can be annoying. And forget fighting frizzy winter hair!
Rather than fuss over the details, outsource your styling to someone else. Try StitchFix. You’ll set up your online account with your sizes and personal style preferences, and someone will select five items from outerwear to accessories and ship them to you. You will pay a $20 styling fee, but once you receive your box and wardrobe selections, you can apply this amount toward the payment of the items you decide to keep.
Rent the Runway is also great for dresses. You can receive up to two sizes for each outfit selection, and you determine how long you’d like to keep the items in your possession.
De-poof without breaking your budget. DryBar is fab, but spending $40 + tip a week adds up. Try LifeBooker to find salons with more affordable pricing (usually $25 + tip).
4. GET YOUR SOAK ON WITH EPSOM SALT
Were you a mermaid in your past life? On social days off, set up a bath-time ritual. Connect to our Mermaid Respite Spotify Playlist, light candles, and pour two cups of lavender Epsom salts into a hot bath.
There is a lot of research about various ways to deal with stress and sleeplessness, but one of the causes could simply be a low level of magnesium in your body. According to Dr Oz, when deficient in this mineral, you can experience muscle cramps and twitches, constipation, sleeplessness, and anxiety. You could eat more magnesium-rich foods, but a simple Epsom Salt bath is a more luxurious fix.
5. REDUCE YOUR HOLIDAY SHOPPING LIST
Gifting may be another source of holiday fatigue for many of us. Here are some tactics to help in this area.
First, buy gifts in bulk. Facial masks, journals, books and cuffs all make great gifts. Get to Amazon and order in mass. Keep them in your closet along with gift bags and tissue paper, and you'll always have a meaningful and simple holiday solution for family members, co-workers and friends.
For family members, we decided instead of playing the gift guessing game, we'd set up Pinterest wish page or send each other links to three items under $100. We pick one to purchase.
Finally, you can also opt for a group experience or outing. This year all our girlfriends decided to make a date to visit Aire for an afternoon of hot & cold pool plunging and massages. Everyone pays for herself, and we just make this a celebration of our friendship.
